Breaking the Cycle of Inter-Generational Trauma
Sara LaHayne (2021) links SEL to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Like many immigrant families, my parents dedicated their time and energy to providing a stable home, ensuring we had enough to eat, and prioritizing our education. While they successfully met our physiological and safety needs, there was limited emphasis on nurturing feelings of love, belonging, and self-esteem. Rather than receiving praise for good grades, they were simply expected. Expressing emotions, whether positive or negative, was not encouraged, and the opinions of others often took precedence over my own. Recognizing the impact this had on my emotional well-being, I am determined to create a different experience for my children by breaking this cycle.
